Installing ConfigMgr 2007 Secondary Site keeps having status "Install Pending"

by Thomas Forsmark Sørensen 16. May 2012 23:29

When installing a ConfigMgr 2007 secondary site I have seen several times that it keeps showing "Install Pending" in the ConfigMgr console.

There are several problems that can lead to this. I will try to mention the problems here and how I have solved them.

 Solution

The secondary sit server is not added to the SMS_SiteToSiteConnection_XXX group on the primary ConfigMgr server.

During the installation of the secondary site the installation program should add the secondary site server to the local group SMS_SiteToSiteConnection_XXX (where XXX is the site code of the primary server) on the primary site server.

Add the secondary site server to the group SMS_SiteToSiteConnection_XXX.

Encryption keys are not exchanged between the primary and secondary site.

During the installation of the secondary site the installation program should exchange the encryption keys between the primary and the secondary sites. But sometimes this is not done.

Manually transfer encryption keys from parent to child and from the child to the parent.

The procedure for transferring the encryption keys can be found in the “Troubleshooting tips” section in the bottom of this page. The article is for SMS 2003 but the solution is the same for ConfigMgr 2007.

Primary server is not a member for local administrators group on secondary site.

For the installation of the secondary site to be successfully the primary server should be a member of the local administrators group on the secondary site.

Add the primary server to the local administrators group on the secondary site.

DNS search order is wrong on the secondary site is wrong.

When installing a secondary site in another domain as the primary server is in (but in the same forest) , the FQDN for the target domain must be listed at the top of the suffix search list on the secondary site server

Change the  search order on the secondary site server to have the target domain in the top of the list.

A guide to change the search order can be found here. The guide is for SMS 2003 but the procedure is the same for ConfigMgr 2007.

So if you experience “Install pending” forever when installing a secondary ConfigMgr 2007 site do the following:

1.     Check that the primary server is a member of the local administrators group on the secondary server.

2.     Check that the secondary server is added to the SMS_SiteToSiteConnection_XXX group in the primary server.

3.     If the secondary server is in another domain as the primary server, check the DNS search order on the secondary site.

4.     If none of the above helped try to manually transfer the encryption keys between the  primary and secondary sites.

Updated: A wrong local group was shown. The goup SMS_SiteSystemToSiteServerConnection_XXX has now been corrected to SMS_SiteToSiteConnection_XXX
