ConfigMgr 2012 R2 SP1 CU1 - Hotfix for "Conditional Access is slow to unblock devices"

by Thomas Forsmark Sørensen 18. August 2015 21:31

Microsoft just released a new hotfix KB3079897 for ConfigMgr 2012 R2 SP1 CU1.

"Conditional Access is slow to unblock devices for email access in System Center Configuration Manager"

Symptoms

When you run Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager Service Pack 1 or System Center 2012 Configuration Manager Service Pack 2 on a server, you may experience the following performance issue or race condition:•Performance issue

After Conditional Access is enabled and deployed, and devices are enrolled and compliant with the compliance policies that are deployed, performance tests reveal up to a 10-minute delay to unblock devices so that they start to receive email messages. The unblocking of devices occurs when compliance messages are received through a fast channel. This processing had dependencies that caused delays. More...

New update that requires multiple reboots: KB3075222 - The never ending story

by Thomas Forsmark Sørensen 13. August 2015 12:16

A few days ago Microsoft released another Windows Update that require multiple restarts during the installation.

This time it is KB3075222  which is for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

Microsoft has updated their article about these updates here

In SP1 for ConfigMgr 2012 R2 there should be code that can handle multiple restarts during a task sequence but it has turned (as discussed here) out that this is not working on Windows 7.

WSUS console fails with "MMC has detected an error in a snap-in and will unload it"

by Thomas Forsmark Sørensen 6. July 2015 12:18

Today I will blog about a problem I had with the WSUS console on a SCCM Server.

When I tried to start the WSUS console it would just display an error message. It might have been a software update that has caused the problem but I am not sure of that.

When trying to start the WSUS console I got the following error

Direct Access 2012 console failes to load config

by Thomas Forsmark Sørensen 1. July 2015 23:18

I have several DirectAccess configurations at my customers where they use both DirectAccess and VPN on the same server.

I have often seen that when I have changed the DirectAccess configuration on a server with both DirectAccess and VPN  installed then I was not able to start the DirectAccess console afterwards.

The problem:

After changing the DirectAccess configuration and when starting the DirectAccess console the following error message is shown:

"Settings for server <Server Name> cannot be retrieved. VPN is configured to allocate IP addresses using a static address pool, but no IP address ranges are configure"

It seams that DirectAccess configuration faulty will set the VPN configuration to using a static address pool without a pool beeing defined. More...

There is no task sequences available to this computer

by Thomas Forsmark Sørensen 11. July 2013 12:43

Today I had a strange problem.

I was testing OS deployment at a customer and had two test PC's that I was testing Windows 7 deployment on.

At first they could PXE boot and start the Windows 7 deployment but then deployment failed with an error.
I corrected the problem in the task Sequence and PXE booted again and this time the Windows 7 deployment was failing with a new error.

I corrected the error but now I could not PXE boot the computers anymore. When they entered the graphical part of WINPE they just rebooted again.
I checked the MSTSC log file that stated that "There is no task sequences available to this computer".
I checked the ConfigMgr console. Both computers (which was failing) was in the correct collection and they had the Deployment for the Windows 7 deployment.

I then google'ed the problem and found this where they have the same problem. More...

Windows 8 DirectAccess client keeps saying "Connecting"

by Thomas Forsmark Sørensen 10. July 2013 00:43

Today I had a Windows 8 client that could not connect to a DirectAccess server.

In the "Network Connection List" on the Windows 8 client it stated that the DirectAccess connection is "Connecting" and it stays as this forever.
Even though it said that it was still trying to connect to the DirectAccess server, a connection was indeed established. I could ping internal resources.

So it had to be the in Windows 8 build in Direct Access Network Connectivity Assistant that could not find out that a DA connection had been established.
In the configuration of the DirectAccess server the configuration wizard had added DirectAccess-WebprobeHost.domain.com as a “Network Connectivity Assistant” (NCA) Resource. This is the host name that the NCA will try to contact to determine if there is connectivity to the internal network.

It turned out that the DNS record for DirectAccess-WebprobeHost did not exist in the internal DNS.
According to this TechNet article the DNS A record for DirectAccess-WebprobeHost should point to the internal IP of the DirectAccess server.
After adding the DNS record and empty the DNS cache on the Windows 8 client it now shows in the “Network Connection List” that the status of the connection to the DirectAccess server is “Connected”.

Lenovo ThinkPad W530 missing keys

by Thomas Forsmark Sørensen 28. June 2013 13:29

I have got myself a Lenovo Thinkpad W530 and I am wondering what Lenovo have been thinking when designing the new keyboard layout.

My loving "page back" and "page forward" have been replaced with "page up" and "page down" and alot of other keys are missing.

And why have the "menu key" has been replaced by the "Print Screen" key. But why have Lenovo placed the "Print Screen" key next to the most used keys (AltGR, CTRL, Space)? The "Print Screen" key is almost never used (by anyway).

Alot of the missing keys have been replaced by FN combos that are not even printed on the keyboard. Those are:

Break  = Fn + B
SysRq = Fn + S
ScrLK  = Fn + K
Pause = Fn + P

So glad to get my "Pause key" back Sealed
